7 things to know before going on adventures at sea

Many travellers and tourists are drawn to oceans and seas for the experience of a lifetime. Going on a cruise or under the sea is an item that is yearning to be ticked off the bucket list of almost every adventurer.

It is not unexpected when the limitless horizon characterises fantastic journeys, and the cool sea breeze sets the scene for an exciting and upcoming adventure. Every ride is set to be a new experience.

Just like every other means of travel, being at sea has its risks, disadvantages and downsides. However, it is still one of the best ways to create lifelong memories.

A tourist expert, Mayowa Obasanya, who works with Diamond and Pearls Travels, believes that sea adventures are exciting and affordable depending on the budget of the tourist.

According to her, other important factors are the chosen cruise line; the number of nights the passenger chooses to stay; the cabin selected, with suites usually being more expensive than other cabins with no windows or partial view.

But how can you guarantee your journey will be as epic as possible? Here are seven steps to follow for a memorable adventure at sea.

Check your health status

Obasanya said the first thing passengers needed to do was to check their health to find out if they were fit to go on a cruise, travel by sea, or go on any type of sea adventure.

The travel guide added that being at sea could trigger some health issues, especially if the unexpected happened.

She said, “For instance, for people who suffer from hypertension, if any mishap happens on board or while at sea, it can trigger high blood pressure, which can be devastating. Also, for people who take medications, it is important to go with them and have them handy throughout the trip.”

Know how to swim

According to the travel expert, it is important for people going to the sea to know how to swim.

She said this was necessary should there be any emergency which required passengers to be given life jackets or asked to dive into the waters.

She added, “For someone who doesn’t know how to swim, it might be a bit difficult to survive such a scenario. If you value your life and you don’t know how to swim, it is best not to go on wild sea adventures like diving, but if you know how to swim pretty well and you are ready to explore to the fullest, diving might be just the adventure you need.”

Find out about medical assistance

Since being healthy and fit for the journey is one of the most important steps, Obasanya said it was essential for tourists to contact touring companies or cruise lines to find out if they had medical personnel aboard should there be any emergency during the journey.

“Do not board a ship or go on any adventure where a medical practitioner is absent. Also, find out the type of medical assistance that would be provided and medications that would be readily available while at sea,” she added.

Have comfortable shoes

Comfort cannot be overemphasised when it comes to sea adventures. It is important for passengers to travel with comfortable shoes in preparation for sea turbulence.

Obasanya said, “With sea turbulence, you need to put on something comfortable so you can have a firm grip on the floor and not trip or tumble. When the ship is sailing, anything can happen, especially in spots where there will be high current or high tide, so one needs to wear shoes that are comfortable at all times.

“Shoes like high heels and very tight footwear are not advisable. Also, remember to pack comfortable travel clothes and sunscreen.”

Be open about allergies

Obasanya urged tourists to be open about allergies for adequate measures to be put in place.

She advised that tourists should also ask questions about the type of food served on the ship before eating.

“Before you go on any kind of adventure at sea, there are forms that are to be filled. So, it is important for passengers who have allergies to mention them and also specify their triggers, so they would not be served what can trigger a reaction. Also, it is important to ask questions before eating anything,” Obasanya said.

Undergo safety training

Although the expert said most travel companies would not offer diving services on the Mediterranean Caribbean cruise because of the risk attached, there were exceptions, however, in places like Mauritius.

She explained that in such places, tourists were usually accompanied by divers, and most adventures would be in shallow waters.

Obasanya noted that before commencement, there would be safety training carried out for all tourists.

She said, “There will be safety training before diving, where tourists would learn how to use sign languages and signals under the water to communicate with the divers on whether or not they are comfortable, if they want to go deeper into the water, or they want to go higher; all that is sorted beforehand.

“Also, during the training, they advise people who might be afraid and at risk of suffering panic attacks to not venture into it, because it could be disastrous once under the water.”

Fill safety form

Obasanya said, “What the form entails is that if anything goes wrong under the water, especially death, the diving company would not be held liable. So, tourists need to know all the details before they go ahead on such adventures.

“Some people who live by the mantra ‘you only live once and die once’, are ready to go ahead and explore the sea to the fullest, it is their choice and life is here for them to enjoy.”
